Do I HAVE to stretch?

Hmm do you HAVE to stretch? No. Similarly, you don’t HAVE to drink water everyday…but I highly recommend you do.

Wait what am I even trying to say here?…..YES PEOPLE, PLEASE STRETCH!

It’s hard for me to say this because I’m one of those people who used to hate stretching… alone. I danced all my life growing up so I was rarely forced to stretch alone. Once I stopped dancing, the only time I would really stretch is in a yoga class (again, never alone). Otherwise I was just moving around my muscles briefly to “warm” them up before exercising.

Once I started getting serious at the gym, I got serious about my stretching. Why?
Well it improves/ increases:

  • circulation
  • flexibility
  • posture
  • stress relief
  • muscle strength
  • bone strength
  • increases energy
  • coordination

AND lowers risk of injury.

HAHA let’s all take a moment to embrace how cheesy this picture is…

So take some quality time to stretch after your workout. I’ve made it a goal of mine to get back all 3 of my splits (left, right, center) this summer so it will push me to stretch more every day. Join me in my journey to splits! Just 20 mins a day, and we should have them all within weeks (I hope)!

Stretching really is important, but I think guys are way worse than us in this regard! I see saw many guys lifting and not caring about stretching at all! I always stretch after workouts, though my post-run /post-legs stretches are the longest, I feel my legs need the most stretching!

It’s funny…I read this yesterday and meant to comment! I totally agree with you about needing to stretch! That’s why I am making it my focus this month on my blog. I was not a dancer but was pretty flexible growing up as an athlete but you definitely lose it as an adult if you don’t do it regularly. That’s why I looooove yoga!

Yeah! It’s hard to stick with it, but something we have to remember to do! I lovee yoga it’s the best!

I know what you mean about stretching alone! It was part of the routine to stretch with the team when I played soccer, volleyball and softball. I so often find myself a few minutes into my workout remembering I forgot to stretch!

Exactly! When you’re alone it’s so much harder haha! That’s why I love doing hot yoga on the weekends when I have time- it’s so relaxing!

We need more people like you to make this more public! Seriously bodybuilding, olympic lifting or any heavy weight sport would not have so many injured athletes if they just stretched more and or do yoga!

Great article.. Often stretching comes last for me but over the past year have learned how beneficial it is after an injury.

I’m guilty of skipping stretching too often. I would love to be able to do the splits again! I think it will be a summer goal for me 🙂

I have to stretch. I have scoliosis in my lower back from a sports injury, so I make an effort to do various twists in my yoga. I came to realize this after months of neglect. The morning following yoga? I felt like I was an inch taller, and moved easier. I don’t want to experience that again.

I actually am guilty of skipping stretching sometimes..doesn’t feel the same when you take the time to stretch. I now make sure to put in a 15 minute stretch before exercising and 15 after or so.
